I saw the movie in the theater back in 1967. Always liked the song.

Lip-synching was distracting.

Verboten! High school girl falls in love with her teacher. This happens all the time. It also works in reverse.

MTV used this theme at their inauguration ball for Bill Clinton.

MTV has said they just didn’t time to prepare to organize such parties when Republicans win.

Sidney Poitier was fantastic in the film.

One of the few 1960’s films where the BLACK GUY was the mature, intelligent one teaching wayward inner city white students.

I had no idea James Clavell wrote that movie! He became known to me for writing a far different (”Shogun”) genre.

You’re right. Ironically, try the shoe on the other foot with “Blackboard Jungle” (mid-50s), where Glen Ford is the teacher and Sidney is the miscreant with a gospel-quartet-singing silver lining. On the other hand, the smartass punk white kid, played by the talented Vic Morrow, was too far gone.

“One of the few 1960’s films where the BLACK GUY was the mature, intelligent one”

Unfortunately, watching a mature black guy is not as entertaining as watching a hoodlum or athlete, and aspiring to become a mature black guy is too much trouble and not cool.
