A long time ago when I was in college I remember reading “Poland” by James Mitchner. One thing I recall from that book is the extent to which Polish nobles had large land holdings in what is Ukraine. Russians did as well. I perhaps drew the wrong conclusion thinking that the Ukrainian people more or less followed the religious preferences of the landowner — much like in Germany at the time. Poor assumption on my part.
