I remain skeptical.. Esper seems to be doing a good job but the brass standing behind him today looked nervous and a little spooked.

He’s got a lot of advisers, but somewhere he has someone he trusts who has explain the difference between a punitive war and a war of occupation. And he is not being drawn into any of the latter without a declaration from Congress.
We have not seen a president take that stand since the Marshal Plan was implemented.
Don’t know who has taught him this, it may have been someone early in life at West Point.
