When Mayor Lori Lightfoot met with top Chicago Police Department officials a week ago, she had a number in mind: 500.
Lightfoot pressed the police brass on what they intended to do to keep the 2019 body count in Chicago below 500, police sources say.
As of Tuesday evening, the police department’s murder count for the year was 492. Officials say they’re hopeful that total won’t surpass 500 by the time the new year begins at midnight.
The 2019 murder total is expected to be the lowest since 2015.
The mayor, elected in April, could get a symbolic victory in a year when she butted heads with President Donald Trump over what he called Chicago’s “crime wave.”
“We’ve been looking at this 500 number for a while,” said Anthony Guglielmi, chief police spokesman. “The police department has been working since 2016 to get violence back to what it was before that year. We are nowhere near where we want to be as a city.”

Headline writers apparently do not learn English any more. Why is it OK for the police to murder 500 in any given year?
I know that isn't what was meant, but it is exactly what was written.
I thought this was satire when I started reading it. Reading that someone actually said, basically, that 500 murders in a year is acceptable just didn’t compute.
It’s not a murder if the person dies from injuries later, and it’s not a murder if the person is killed with a knife or bat or by vehicular homicide.
It’s called, “creative bookkeeping”.
Anecdotally, it seems they manipulate other numbers as well. I was rear-ended years ago on the Dan Ryan on an icy patch of road. The police came, but wrote NO tickets - which made it tougher for me in the context of explaining no fault to the insurance company. Anyway, the police told me they didn't want to write any tickets for the accident because their accident rates in that area were too high.
How about SOLVING 500 murder cases?
Make arrests. Don't have a revolving door with criminals. Back the police. Provide quality education. Break up the gangs. Do these, and the numbers will take care of themselves.
MANY police departments manipulate their numbers.
This number is mind-boggling because:
1. Chicago is down at least 750k people since 1950;
2. Without incredible response teams and modern medical miracles performed by people with GSW experience beyond what doctors would have in wartime, that number would be 700+ easy.
BTW, guess who pays for most of those medical miracles. Not Blue Cross. Not Aetna.
Murders are down, but Epstein style suicides are up.
