We did this when I was a kid. Our fathers were across the road at a Masonic Lodge meeting and a few of us boys took to throwing snowballs in the dark at passing cars. After a few cars went by, we saw a set of headlights coming and gathered up a bunch of snowballs and let them fly just as the car went by. As the balls hit the side of the door, we saw the Michigan State Police shield on it. The cop hit the brakes and he and his partner came after us through the woods. They caught one of my friends. I hid beneath a pine tree that had boughs touching the ground. At one point I could reach out and touch the officer’s leg if I wanted to. I was so scared I could hardly breathe, and I was certain the pounding of my heart would give me away.

That was the last time I ever threw snowballs at cars.

I'll never forget the day my friend heaved a snowball at a passing car from 50 yards away ... and it went right through the driver's side window and plastered the guy in the side of the head. He swerved for a few seconds and damn near crashed into a street sign.

If there was a baseball scout on the scene my friend would have been signed to a minor league contract even at the young age of 13. We were so far away from the car that we couldn't even see that the window was open.

You got that right. When you lived in the “hood” you knew every yard, alley, and escape route down cold. Also which garage side entrance was always open so you had a place to hide in if things got too hot in the chase.
Had to know your turf!

You sound as though you believe they deserved being shot. I hope that isn’t your sentiment.

Snowballs? Pshaw!

We had a 1 acre tilled corn patch right up on and overlooking the road. Our chore was to weed it. Out of boredom we thought it was a great idea to chuck clumps of tilled up dry dirt at cars passing by...One driver stopped and threatened to tell our father...then we realized this wasnt a good idea(I mean really, just harmless clumps of dry hard dirt!) and stopped. Dad would have beaten us raw...

The snowballs were WHITE!

So it is a hate crime.

Now I’d call that “disproportionate response.” For sure.

Even if they did, the driver wouldn’t know, and unless there was something extreme like explosives involved, shooting a kid is crazy.

Ages ago I was driving home in rush hour after work and a group of yutes standing on a corner spit on me as I went by. Never occurred to me to shoot ‘em, but I did immediately circle around and let go with a big old hocker on my next pass. Got one kid, too, right between the eyes. Later felt kinda bad about it because maybe he wasn’t the one who spit on me... Yeah, gotta be careful when you’re hot under the collar. It’s not when you do your best thinking.

When I come upon snowballers I lower the window enough to yell “You pussies couldn’t hit the side of a barn”! That gets ‘em going...

when I was 12, a friend and I hit a car with snowballs. Of course, we didn’t know until after, the driver was the guy from the neighborhood who was the local tough guy, drinker, and brawler, who had been to jail for assault, etc. etc..

He chased us for at least 45 minutes - with his girlfriend in the car. Like you, we know what fences to jump and backyards to hide in, which aided our escape. I like to think we helped his girlfriend realize he was a psychopath so she could get out of that relationship....

12 & 13 y/o out at 8pm (Dark) throwing snowballs.
That’s asking for trouble. They’re old enough to know better.
People are jumpier when hit with anything at night by surprise, even a snowball.

I never caused an accident either, but it was dumb luck.
I could listen to cars on the road, judge the speed and how much to lead them, and lob a wet snowball over a wood privacy fence without ever being able to see the car.

It was the challenge of it.
