MT. PLEASANT, Pa. The eastbound lanes of the Pennsylvania Turnpike are back open after a crash involving three tractor trailers, a tour bus and a car.
First responders were calling it a mass casualty incident. Emergency crews said five people were killed and roughly 60 people were taken to area hospitals with injuries.

Thanks for that link. Also helped with the pronunciation. :)
I’ve been doing this for years, and never knew what it was called. :)
Not really. Shes probably still mad at me though.
Not as mad as my other daughter. I kind of arranged for her to get pulled over the day she got her permit.
Interesting site. Nice poem. Thanks!
Same here.
I originally started doing it to avoid driving on the I90 Turnpike in Ohio.
The traffic and the never-ending construction on that road drove me nuts.
So, one day I went to the store and noticed these red covered county road map books on a magazine rack.
I bought all of the map books for the counties that I had to travel through to get where I was going.
I sat down with the books and plotted a route that avoided the toll road and major urban areas.
My new route only added about a half hour to my trip on a good day. In most cases it was probably a wash because good days on I90 were rare.
And a Lot of nice photography.
Theres not really a good shunpike route for the PA turnpike.
I drive it for both work and personal. The only good workaround I know of adds about 100 miles to a nine hour trip.
An extra 100 miles is a bit much if you are on a schedule.
Turning 9 hours in to 11 would be a bit tiring as well.
But if you are not pressed for time, you should try it someday.
I do love the Pennsylvania countryside, what little I have seen of it from the highway.
But, Ohio doesn’t have much in the way of mountains which makes detours a little easier.
Ive long wanted to take Lincoln Hwy the whole way. Its not so much a schedule as for the personal trips Im heading to see family and want
to just get there.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike should have been condemned years ago. Charging a toll on that road is an insult.
In the winter? The condition of those roads is usually far worse than the turnpike, not to mention all the curves.
“Letting your ego or your fear guide you on ANY road, much less bad weather roads like in PA, are equally fatal.”
While it is true that fear can adversely affect a person’s driving, I can’t agree that fear is as dangerous as ego. At least fear is more likely to lead a person to slow down.
Yes, even in the winter. US-30 wasn’t bad, and I learned to drive on PA-31 in all seasons, as it was the main road through my hometown.
Harry that sucks
I've done this for years....even if you can get one tire onto a little snow on the road, it helps....
If you’re familiar with that stretch of highway you surely have to know about I-84 from Scranton over to the NY state line. Probably the most forlorn road in the state. Once you pass Mt. Cobb exit, you’re literally on your own - absolutely nothing, and at night, in winter, nobody until a crash happens and the emergency services finally show up.
Thank you for the link :-D Even when I’m working, I’ve done exactly that, often just to get around an accident or construction backup. It reminds me that there is so much more to life than being in a hurry - those are the days that I lose more time than I would have just sitting behind whatever mess on the highway there was.
I know what you mean. I get on the highway and suddenly the traffic makes me want to just get the driving over with.
Even on state highways the traffic can be brutal.
Get off on the county roads and things relax a bit. It takes longer to get somewhere, and it is easy to get lost but eventually you get there.
GPS is great but always have maps with you. I have had my GPS get me lost a time or two.
I can never figure out why people drive like maniacs in such terrible weather.
