I had a friend from De Funiak Springs last name Caspar a long tkme ago.

I still drive thru there annually headed to the beach

I looked up the Sam Story legend and the scots.

You piqued my curiosity

I might look for that area next time I’m near

I can still remember old Florida

So my 76 year old MIL is visiting. My wife was an infant adoption. Because of health concerns for our granddaughter, we needed my wife’s family health history. Two years ago, with some help from the internet, I found my wife’s biological mother. We all met last year in October and this year both families thought it would be fun to send Mom out to spend Christmas with us here in New Mexico.

All that being said to explain the heightened emotional state of the past two weeks.

Tattoos? I’m getting there.

Last night, with the family over for dinner, my son (who has one tattoo) suggested that the ladies (my MIL, my wife and my DIL) all go get matching tattoos on the last day my MIL is in town (today).

Much to my chagrin, they all thought it was a great idea.

Not one of them currently has a tattoo, but the rest of the evening was spent with them searching the web for appropriate tattoo designs. They texted friends who have marred their bodies to get recommendations of tattoo “artists”. They discussed size and placement.

All the while I prayed the madness would pass.

So far this morning there has been no mention of tattoos, but I think they have hatched a plan and are keeping it from me.

If this happens, I will be the only one in the family without a tattoo. I guess that means I will be the non-conforming rebel! Cool!

I would remember Caspar but we somehow missed meeting. I spent most of my life away but returned to the area after my wife died and went back to grad school.

I think the Riddles were lowland Scots or Northern Irish, Byrds, all over the British Isles, Morrisons were Highland Scots as were my Mother’s family, the MacDuffies.

The MacDuffies came from the island of Colonsay. They were one of the 5 septs of MacAlpin, the kings of Scotland.

The town is about 15-20% Black. The country about zero. They are all athletic. At one time Florida had 3 starters on their national championship team from DeFuniak.

It also has a few hills relatively speaking

Caspar was a dozer operator for my dad. We hit it off and hung out and fished and whatnot...he married a local gal and took a pipeline job out west when our work dried up

My dads company did all the water and sewer layout for Lake Forest in Daphne on eastern shore mobile bay

I’m a Jackson miss native but did my senior year at Fairhope in 74-75

We moved back to Jackson when the job finished ..I didn’t like being moved senior year but that was my dads decision no discussion

I regrouped with my friends and went to ole miss

I love that part of the world now and could live somewhere tween Waveland Mississippi and Appalachicola now easily ....backwater with a dock and decent twin engine sport fish...it’s cheap to do in Mississippi

Point Clear in Alabama is my favorite spot but it’s too rich now

As a kid we went to Pensacola a lot...You could drink at 18 then

The Barrels ...that was the place I’m sure you remember

That provided my humor for the day. Read it a few times yesterday.

Also went to google maps to check out the ‘hood above Lagoa. That’s as impressive as anything I’ve seen in SoCal.

Yes that little monkey lived on in legend

My friend in Mississippi who died in 2017 loved to tell it over and over

I have no idea why a generally otherwise sweet monkey hated this gregarious Israeli

That little monkey would of course bury his nose in the crotch of any nubile femalion at the house

And play with himself screeching

They have no shame
