I recall a tragic story of the killing of a Vietnamese man in or around San Jose California. The killer beat the man to death with a rock (multiple skull fractures). However, the family was told it wasn’t a hate crime based on the ethnicity of the attacker (must have been Vietnamese too). This terminology just doesn’t do anyone any good - this family is, what? Supposed to be comforted because, “Yes, your father was beaten in the head with a rock until he died....but at least the killer did NOT hate him?”
