I only found,
I believe that every human has a finite number of heartbeats," the famous quote goes. "I don't intend to waste any of mine running around doing exercises."
Contrary to what you might have heard, Neil Armstrong never said this. What's more, he disagreed with it. But as much as it's a misattribution, was Armstrong right to argue?
The simplest answer is 'yes'. There is no strict tally for your ticker, keeping track of your pulse until you've used up your allocation of beats. So get out and exercise (after you've finished reading this article, of course).https://www.sciencealert.com/relationship-between-heart-beat-and-life-expectancy
"patent foramen ovale (PFO)"
An opening between heart chambers that is supposed to heal after birth. In about 25% it does not, and increases the risk of stroke in later life. Dislodged plague can cross from venous to arterial side and cause brain blockages.
I would laugh, but not at his expense.
One of my younger brothers that took up marathon type running in his late 30-40's recently had to have both hip joints replaced.
Genetics or pounding, who knows?
Gee, not a word about all the coke and crank she was doing...
Lemon ?? I need that help. Will research. If you have any info, please share.
THanks
I had a stroke 11 years ago. It was caused by a small hole in my heart that we didn’t find out about until after the stroke.
I left me with seizures.
My beautiful daughter in law (physically fit, ideal weight, exercises regularly, non-smoker, no alcohol or drugs) had a stroke at age 35. Thank God the effects were relatively mild, and have cleared up! Has had migraines since her teens. It was discovered she is missing a vertebral artery on one side of her brain, and it caused her to stroke, and most likely, causes the migraines. High stress job of high school therapeutic counselor for troubled teens. Carries a lot on her shoulders.
“Neil Armstrong never said this”
I do not remember the year. Neil Armstrong was the subject of a ‘special’ on TV. It was mostly about his flying gliders after his retirement. He said closely what I paraphrased. I heard it with my own ears.
As an aside, I, for one, am of his opinion. I do not want to use up my beats exercising.
Jim Fixx famously died while running but the entire male membership of his family died very young and they didn't run at all. It "ran" in his family.
I was a long distance runner, 10k racer and marathon runner when I was younger. When I developed heart problems in my early 60s, I asked my docs how could that be? I didn't drink or smoke, was lean and exercised. Their response was that my whole family had high blood pressure and both my parents died of congestive heart failure. It "runs" in the family. My running just prolonged the inevitable.
Same with joint problems. I had both knees replaced at age 62, the exact same age my dad had both of his replaced and he never exercised or ran a day in his life. It "runs" in the family.
So before we assume the running is what caused most of the ills in these anecdotal stories, one's family history of heart attacks and stokes needs to be factored into the story.
Just because there are these stories of runners having heart attacks or strokes while running, remember, there are also hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of stories of runners who never experience these type problems.
At age 63, I had a quadruple bypass open heart surgery. I recovered and now I walk daily on advice of my cardiologist. He said the running was not necessarily the problem but the lack of aerobic conditioning would be if I didn't get my ass moving again after surgery.
So at age 72, I remain active and work daily on my cattle farm. I would have had heart problems and joint problems , no matter what I did when I was younger, because it "runs" in the family.
Glad she made a recovery. If the stroke is caught in time the ER gives the drug tPA.
Yep - Jim Fixx decided that if some aerobic exercise was good, then the more the better - always pushing harder...he also had a history that took its toll before he got into running.
Thanks!
How much lemon juice, please? And at mealtimes, or on an empty stomach?
There are many causes if strokes and I bet a lot are misdiagnosed.
I was in one hospital and they concluded they would operate on my right caroid artery.
They made a black square on my chest and put in some writing for the surgeon.
I refused, and said I only wanted to be operated on by a certain surgeon at another Hospital.
At 10 PM by amulance they took me to the other hospital.
A team of doctors checked me out, and at 1:30 AM , they said they would not recommnd surgery in the morning because my right carotid artery was only 60% blocked and would not cause me to lose my left side and since I was loosing vision in my left eye also the left eye side problem is not caused by right side brain problems, there is something else wrong with me.
Eventually they found above my heart the distribution system got plugged when my high blood pressure sheared off the linings of the veins and arterys there.
That is inoperable and so they got my blood pressure down and eventually months later, I got back to normal.
I hope you can deal with your seizures and at least get a warning when they are coming. Injuries in falling are another factor in strokes.
Wishing you the best.-Tom
I think everyone understands all that.
Its not about running/exercise CAUSING the events.
It is that it DOES NOT HELP prevent them.
Health nuts are pushing this stuff constantly (and making good money on it) but it seems it is NOT a cure-all.
Also, lemon may taste acidic, but it converts to alkali once it mixes with digestive juices.
I hear you. Fortunately, I post these stories not to warn people against running. I love running (but my arthritic knees and weak ankles do “run in the family”). I post these stories because they’re inspirational. These people overcome their conditions, no matter what the actual causes, and get back to doing the running that they love.
And you know she was doing those things how?
I loved running when I was younger and could do it. Two replacement knees and age forces me to walk daily now instead.
My symptoms were mainly a one-sided headache for a day and then a week of pulsatile tinnitus whereby I could hear every heartbeat loudly in my left ear, so much that I couldnt sleep at night. After 3 days of that, I sought treatment. It took 5 days of tests before I was sent to the ER, after which I spent a day at Barrow Neurological Institute.
At Barrow, multiple doctors kept parading into my room to look at me because I didnt show any signs of typical stroke impairment like Horners sign. They finally determined that my symptoms were caused when one of 3 layers in my carotid artery had been torn and a blood clot had formed which created a blockage. I was put on Plavix for 6 months and it never recurred.
