Maybe it’s NY accent thing?
I grew up thinking “spatula” was pronounced “spatuler” until I read the word.

I always thought it was generally pronounced vahz and, only rarely, the more guttural vAse. But I’ve been told my own accent is bizarre, being influenced by a mother who spent 20 years in NYC before returning to Chicago.
