I hope my response upthread did not imply that it was not serious. When I am accused, I am offended (it has happened to me at work, too). I took it seriously. However, the person(s) who accused me could not/did not see what I said in any other light, despite my explanations.
It’s one of the widest differences among people in that I’ve never gotten others to understand that I just don’t think as they do about certain phrases or words. At best I’ve had them tell me that I am naive, and I disagreed with that as well. I resented someone else “getting” to define what words mean for the rest of us. But to them - my error remained obvious and undeniable. That’s why I call it “the widest difference”, both sides understand differently and in their view, 100% correctly.
