Movie Review: South Korean suspense ‘Parasite’ named Best Film by DC critics
WTOP DC ^ | Dec 2019 | Jason Fraley

When Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite” became the first Korean film to win the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, it was the worthy culmination of a stellar career.

The South Korean master has rattled off gem after gem with a modern monster movie of “Jaws” meets “Godzilla” in “The Host” (2006), a sci-fi social commentary about class divides on an action-packed speeding train in “Snowpiercer” (2013), and a young girl’s adventure to save her beastly friend from a multinational corporation in “Okja” (2017).

This week, his latest and arguably greatest work “Parasite” finally received the overdue American affirmation it deserves, winning Best Film from the Washington Area Film Critics Association and becoming just the second foreign-language film ever (after Roberto Benigni’s “Life is Beautiful”) nominated for the top prize at the SAG Awards.

The story juxtaposes two families of vastly different economic means. The poor Kim family consists of jaded patriarch Ki-taek (Song Kang-ho), hardworking wife Chung-sook (Chang Hyae-jin), sarcastic daughter Ki-jung (Park So-dam) and lazy son Ki-woo (Choi Woo-shik). They live in squalor, folding pizza boxes just to make a little dough.

One day, the son’s college-bound friend introduces them to a wealthy family in need of a tutor, the Parks, consisting of tech C.E.O. father Dong-ik (Lee Sun-kyun), oblivious wife Yeon-gyo (Cho Yeo-jeong), rebellious daughter Da-hye (Jung Ziso) and artistic young son Da-song (Jung Hyeon-jun). One by one, the Kims get closer to the Parks, posing as unrelated individuals in the hopes of getting a taste of the luxurious lifestyle.

To say any more would be a crime. The script, co-written by Joon-ho and Han Jin-won, is so tightly wound with extra layers that there’s no sense in spoilers. Whatever you do, don’t read anything else about the plot...

I prefer Korean books to Korean movies. Have you read the best selling Korean cookbook “101 Ways to Wok Your Dog”?

I saw Snowpiercer in South Korea and rather liked it. As with any science fiction drama, such as Terminator, you can’t ask too many questions and just have to go with the flow.

Parasite is a pretty creative dramedy, but it is like most Hollywood movies in that you must subject yourself to moral garbage to extract some entertainment value. I believe this is by design.

Hollywood reacted with more hatred and fury to the launch of Vidangel than even their vitriol against Passion of the Christ. Vidangel offers edited movies and TV shows that give viewer the option to skip profanity, blasphemy, nudity, sex scenes, or other content the viewer (or parents of young viewers) find objectionable. Hollywood went berserk, and they found a liberal judge to basically destroy the service. (Vidangel has pivoted and continues to offer some family-friendly content and services but on a very limited basis.)

Saw ‘The Host’ and really enjoyed it. I’m sure this film is worth a look-see.

One could, if one wanted, watch it for free

There are also plenty of places to download it and watch it at your leisure. Tonight we'll be watching A Beautiful Day In the Neighborhood and it will be extra nice knowing Tom Hanks won't get a dime from us.

Dear Miss Mears,

I couple of weeks ago I said something nasty and ugly and snarky to you, and I beg your forgiveness. You are a good woman and don't deserve to treated with the disrespect which I showed you.

Please forgive me. From the bottom of my heart I'm truly sorry. I don't want to be on bad terms with any FReeper. I hope we can be FRiends again.

I wish you health and prosperity in the coming year.

I found this to be fascinating movie, in characters, script and acting. The plot is well developed.

But at one point I saw the parasites as today’s Democrats. They manipulate every situation to their advantage and care not for the people they hurt.

This is a great movie about today’s liberal.

By the way, if you have not seen the Korean movie “Ode to my father” check it out. It is tremendous.

I bought a DVD of it a year ago and do not know who carries the stream. I thought Netflix did for some time.

It has the sweetest scene ever put in a movie - it was taken from real life. You’ll understand when you catch it.

I saw this movie last night and I recommend it. You really need to pay attention to the movie to “get it” however. Also, the dialogue is mostly Korean so there will be subtitles.
