In 1980, I was riding an Amtrak train from Los Angeles to Ann Arbor, Mich. with a group of Ronald Reagan supporters who were on their way to the Republican National Convention in Detroit. As the train entered the Great Plains, which were undergoing the most intense heat wave since 1936, the air conditioning failed and the windows couldn't be rolled down. So the train quickly ran out of beer.

However, the conductor announced that we would be stopping at La Junta, Colo. for about a half an hour, and that there was a liquor store about a block from the station. So when the train stopped, the passengers bolted for the store--and I was one of the first in line.

Eventually, the train was resupplied with beer. But based on that experience (the train was 14 hours late getting in and 12 hours late getting home), I have never since ridden Amtrak and most likely never will again.
