One benefit of living in NJ is that you can plausibly pretend you don’t speak English (for all panhandlers - organized or freelancers). I support whole cities with my taxes, and contribute at my church.

Spent over 20 years living in Cleveland. My first reaction to someone asking for money is that either I'm being scammed or set up for a robbery.

That sort of reaction dies hard.

After 5 years of rural living, I've come to believe most people here are sincere. Whether the cause they support is worthy and whether they make effective use of my donations are different subjects altogether, but I no longer am looking for the accomplice with the knife to show up when I open my wallet.
