An officer shot a man in Trenton early Saturday morning after two people were stabbed, authorities said. One victim was in critical condition and entered emergency surgery, according to Trenton Capt. Stephen Varn and a spokeswoman for the Mercer County Prosecutors Office. Both the suspect and the second victim were in stable condition.
Police received a call before 2 a.m. that there was a street fight by the 1000 Block of South Clinton Ave. When officers arrived, they found two men holding a third. As a cop approached, the third man broke free and began stabbing the other two with a large knife, Varn said.
The cop ordered him to stop. When he did not, the officer opened fire. The man was hit at least once, Varn said, which ended the attack.
All three were taken to the Capital Health Regional Medical Center, about three miles away. Varn and the prosecutors office declined to release names or more details abou

Why didn't the police just shoot the knife out of his hand?
