My late mother who studied and sang opera, was a classically trained pianist and also sang with a few local big bands on the radio in the early 40s, and hated pretty much all the rock and pop music I liked back in the late 70s and early 80s when I was still living at home.
But one day I was playing Linda Ronstadt greatest hits on my new stereo, IIRC it was the song Blue Bayou and she heard it and asked who that singer was. I told her and she had never heard of her before but that she had a wonderful voice, that she had an amazing range and very good vocal control, quite a high praise coming from my mother who knew good singers from bad.
Years later I bought her the Linda Ronstadt Nelson Riddle album Lush Life and she loved it. My mother also loved the Gloria Estefan album - Mi Tierra, Estefan being some else who she recognized as having a terrific singing voice (and she loved Cuban jazz/big band music).
Im sure my mom would have hated Linda Ronstadts politics and her personal life choices but she knew a great talent when she heard it.
As for Linda Ronstadts appearance, shes 72 years old and she has Parkinsons.
I think its all fine and well to criticize her for her politics but attacking her because she no longer looks like her 20 something year old self? I wish I at 59 years old that I still looked like my 21-year-old self. And I wish I had inherited my mothers singing voice. No. Instead I inherited my fathers carpentry skills. But I can, like my mother cook and bake so its all good :)
