It depends, and being starbucks, I’m not sure what kind of investigation they did. But suppose they found that the servers regularly played “practical jokes” like this, and the manager had encouraged them or allowed it and made it seem like it was acceptable.

The company may have just decided that wasn’t what they wanted in a manager. She said she saw the muffin; but she didn’t then ask if they had labeled anything else wrong; she apologized, but then allowed them to give out the cups; she might have violated company policy in trying to offer the department free drinks if they came back, rather than working through the corporate legal and/or customer relations department.

It could also be that when she spoke with them later, she said something about being childish for posting to facebook, and just made matters worse.

We don’t have the entire story.

I can absolutely agree with you on that. It just really bothers me to watch people pile on somebody when we obviously don't know the entire story.

And if some 20-21 year old is confused or mentally ill, or whatever, more the reason to show a just a smidgen of compassion.

The general tone here and elsewhere, is that she was the one who affixed the label. That she was the one who was intolerant or insensitive. And therefore she's a fat ugly pig who deserves what she gets. And that's NOT what I'm seeing in reading the article (and others previously). Maybe she's a crappy manager after 9 months on the job who deserves to get canned. I'll grant that.

The police chief (not even the original officer) decided to make this a national case by posting a big rant on facebook and getting everybody all worked up about how this signifies the apocalypse (or some such nonsense). I'll bet he's having some regrets about that now.

Rose is right. This COULD have been handled among each other like adults, even if that resulted in firings. But it wasn't. It was handled by the social media mob.
