I use it all the time. I knew someone who claimed to be a conservative, but opensecrets showed heavy donations to liberals, exclusively.
Another good one is the wayback machine at archive.org, if they track a website (like say John Kerry’s campaign website) it shows every change. If Wayback has the website, you can look for hasty deletions, shifts, additions.

I have spent some time there, and since I have 1000s of stock symbols memorized it is easy for me to see what is going on. Many of them look like shell corporations (look for LLCs). Most listed stocks are CA-based (silicon valley) tech companies. Some of the Repubs tend to have oil stocks also. You can see what they bought and when, and also how much each company contributed to which candidate.
Interesting, especially the people who went from very low worth or negative worth to now being worth several million bucks. That alone should tell us how corrupt congress is.
Both parties engage in seniority position extortion: to acquire and maintain positions on committees or caucus they must raise certain dollar amounts for the party.
You can search for donors to campaigns. I like to see who my neighbors donate to.
