The sheriff said neighbours had recently complained about rampant feral hogs, and officials have since laid traps for them.

There's where the problem started. The neighbors should have set traps and shot the feral hogs themselves instead of waiting on "officials". Before humans and pets are attacked, it's best to have a freezer full of sausage.
