Egads is right. If Mel Gibsons movie Apocalypto has any accuracy to it at all these people were nothing short of satanic IMO.

Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto, while a good movie for entertainment purposes, was wildly inaccurate. His sacrificial scene was more akin to Aztecs than Mayans.

When Mayans engaged in sacrifice of captives it was a smaller affair than Aztecs. They didn’t grab some random unwitting farmers living in the jungle outside of town, it was typically execution of high status political rivals- competitors- captured from other city-states in war, to eliminate them as a threat.

They also engaged in self-sacrifice. A ruler was expected to sacrifice by letting his own blood - with a stingray spine used on his pecker to release the blood. A female noble would pierce her tongue to perform a blood sacrifice.

They weren’t any more savage than the Jesuits burning people at the stake, or the Romans crucifying people, or Jacobins in France.
