A large number of pagan religions included human sacrifice. We know Central American civilizations were among them. As far as I know, none of the North American Indian tribes committed human sacrifices, related to religion, though some tribes tortured and killed their enemy adult captives. Possibly because they came over from the Far East, (my husband and most American Indians dispute that), and it was not common for Far Eastern peoples to have human sacrifices in their religious practices. If anyone knows otherwise, I’d be interested.
One of the main reasons God forbade the early Israelites to have anything to do with other cultures, (some of whom were distant relatives) was because nearly all of them had human sacrifice, especially of infants, as a part of their idol worship. Also orgies. It was an absence of morality, which defined many non-Israelite cultures. African religions also often included human sacrifices, including infants.

Well heck.

It’s kind of comforting to know that severe psychosis isn’t just a modern problem.

I was wondering if this wasnt the work of some kind of psycho. And not anyone operating in any kind of official capacity.

It might explain a lot if the cultures with really odd practices also had the imperative to treat the mentally ill as “touched by the gods”.

Can you imagine the culture built around emulating and taking direction from your average raggedy Ann or Andy yelling at invisible people on the street corner downtown?

Do you think they were always that way? I wonder what changed. I cant imagine they started off that way, that kind of sick power had to evolve.

Modern American “civilization” is demonic. The Usanians in particular are a despicable culture that practices human sacrifice on a grand scale … in the past 47 years, the Usanians have slaughtered more than 60,000,000 children and have enshrined the slaughter of children as a sacred right (or rite) in their highest law.

When I was in grade school, I was given homework to write a report on any Indian tribe I chose. I chose the local tribes for the Gulf Coat of Texas named Karankawa. Turned out they were cannibals.

They attacked the locals up until around the mid 1800's when there was concerted efforts to wipe them out by the Texans. They were considered extinct about 1850. They kept attacking Texans settlers until and all out war was approved to get rid of them. They were never considered "noble warriors" as some tried to make other tribes of the plains. They murdered, raped and ate settlers until they were finally destroyed.

I teach Sunday school and I read about the Nephilim having red hair, 6 fingers and toes and were over 9 ft tall.

Num 13:32 And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, "The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature.

Num 13:33 There we saw the giants (the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight."

We've thrown our children in the fires of Baal and Moloch since Genesis 6:1. The Commands given by God to Israel many times included rules to follow because of what the Nephilim taught the people. Don't drink blood for one. Make sure you kill your prey before you eat it. American Indians had legends about giants that chased down buffalo running away and they would tear off a leg and eat it raw. Nephilim taught earth dwellers sorcery, witchcraft, spells, and necromancy. Tattoo's were also common. Many of the curses read about in Deut. go back to what the Nephilim introduced on earth. That is why Noah and the Flood is introduced immediately after Genesis 6:1. This evil DNA has survived all the way to today and we call them Democrats. The seed war started back in Genesis 3 will continue until Jesus comes back to take care of Satan's seed called the Antichrist. Being able to murder children and commit sexual abominations is just a few signs of this corrupt DNA being passed through history.

Oh, what a surprise-I’m certain no other humans on any other continent on this planet prior to the 1600’s ever, ever engaged in human sacrifice and cannibalism of captured enemies in war, or of kids and others sacrificed to various deities for a good crop, rain to end a drought, etc-it must just have been those evil Native Americans-surely no society in Europe was ever so ignorant and cruel-surely not the Romans, the Druids-or the those descendants or Rome- Spaniards who brought the torturing and burning of the Inquisition to Europe and the New World-I do NOT see my ancestors as being all that enlightened or gentle-and certainly not as nice people-their methods of torture and murder were just more sophisticated than those of the Native Americans...

History is replete with examples of a psycho being in control-the Roman Empire probably has the best documentation of that-Nero, Caligula, Antoninus, etc, etc...

Some of the Pawnee had the Morning Star ceremony, in which they captured and killed a young woman representing the Star. But not constant large scale sacrifice like the central and South American Indians.

Yeah. But them guys were pretty much aberrations to already established cultural norms.

I was meaning the really early establishment of cultural norms in the unrecorded history of dug up peoples.

How many times have we had stuff linked here that’s been dug up by archaeologists that was real head scratchers as to wth? people were doing or thinking?

I’m starting to think a lot of it might well be answered by “because they followed and listened to psychos and mumbling crazies because... touched by the gods”.

So, gotta stick feathers on your head.
gotta paint the dead bones with red ocher.
Hey! you know what will be fun! lets all cut ourselves!
Everyone! tie boards to your heads until your heads are flat!

Occam’s Razor.

In pre-history, the insane were in charge.

Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto, while a good movie for entertainment purposes, was wildly inaccurate. His sacrificial scene was more akin to Aztecs than Mayans.

When Mayans engaged in sacrifice of captives it was a smaller affair than Aztecs. They didn’t grab some random unwitting farmers living in the jungle outside of town, it was typically execution of high status political rivals- competitors- captured from other city-states in war, to eliminate them as a threat.

They also engaged in self-sacrifice. A ruler was expected to sacrifice by letting his own blood - with a stingray spine used on his pecker to release the blood. A female noble would pierce her tongue to perform a blood sacrifice.

They weren’t any more savage than the Jesuits burning people at the stake, or the Romans crucifying people, or Jacobins in France.

Well, every time something is found that defies easy explanation it is called a religious rite.

The Natchez of Mississippi did though they were quite unique compared with other Indian peoples, speaking an unrelated language. They carried out human sacrifice at least late in their existence [though when the practice started is unknown], largely voluntary according to the French, who witnessed it when a ‘Great Sun’ died and people in his entourage were sacrificed with him. Their method was to take a drug rendering themselves senseless [plug of tobacco] whereupon the executioner would strangle them with a cord. A Sun’s death was also a rare opportunity for commoners willing to self-sacrifice by joining the entourage to raise the status of their kin.
The Natchez were one of the people that kicked Hernando deSoto’s butt, as he encountered them in their prime. It was about 140 years before they saw another white, but by that time they were beginning to suffer the ravages of introduced European diseases because their trade with other tribes exposed them.
The French ultimately slaughtered many of them and sold the survivors off as slaves to the West Indies.
