Dems hold on to Louisiana gov. seat despite Trump visits Kaepernick's agent not optimistic about signing HONG KONG —After an intense, day-long battle, police surrounded anti-government protesters inside a university late Sunday and began to make mass arrests, escalating the struggle over Hong Kong’s campuses in the city’s now-six-month struggle for democracy.
Skirmishes between police and protesters raged into the night outside Hong Kong’s Polytechnic University, leaving the air thick with tear gas and a police vehicle burning.
As police continued to bombard protesters with water cannon, they warned stronger measures could follow.

“We will use the minimal force,” police said in a Facebook video. “We are asking the rioters to stop assaulting the police using cars, gas bombs and bows and arrows. Otherwise we will use force including live rounds.”

Or paying millions of people from all walks of life to participate in mostly peaceful protest activities that have been ongoing for six months?
Or paying unemployment benefits to those who have been fired because of pressure from the CCP for taking part in protests or just showing support for them?
Or paying compensation to the hundreds of people who had died at the hands of police brutality and lawlessness in the past several months?
If you have evidence showing any of the above to be true, please enlighten us rather than make irresponsible insinuations.

What concessions, in both cases?
If you mean the withdrawal of the bill that sparked the initial protests in HK’s case, it was way too late because by then, the government had created more serious problems with unchecked police power that is to this day still getting worse by the day.
You don’t think nefarious money is not taking advantage of the situation? Particularly that it’s a financial hub with many looking to profit. That’s nieve. My statement had nothing to do with the righteousness of people wanting to be free just a recognition that there’s a LOT going on.

Please give us one example of how nefarious money is getting to the protesters if you could.
Somehow it changed from a million people marching peacefully in the streets to a few-hundred black-masked radicals throwing gasoline bombs and shooting arrows. Whether this latter group is sponsored by Soros, the Brennan CIA, or the Chinese government themselves - the result will be an end to Hong Kong’s system of government.
Global depression from what? We buy their crap. They import little from us. Only thing that would happen is what is happening now, we buy from someone else. Google and Apple would be the biggest casualties, but who gives a crap!
For one, I remember when Soros and others attempted to crash the Hong Kong dollar, I think in ‘98. They fought it off with as I understand the help of the Chicoms. He hates them for it and made statements about it. He’s also out recently saying how evil they are. But Soros doesn’t care about human rights so he’s not talking about police state actions when he says evil. He wants power and he’s basically at war with them. His interest is to destabilize, incourage capital flight etc. His money proceeds and promotes moves to the left and greater totalitarian control.
My comments are not about the legitimacy of Hong Kong’s wishes to remain ‘independent’ of chicom rule.
Just that there is a LOT going on.
Moderate elements in the Chinese government were negotiating while hard liners were pushing to roll in the tanks. This was during a period of radical opening up. Deng Xiaoping was the Premier, hardly one to advocate hard line tactics if conciliatory gestures would work.
The Students went on a hunger strike which could make the case they were not thinking rationally any longer. The Chinese asked the students to clear Tienanmen Square so it could hold a traditional greeting for the Russian President (Gorbachev?) that was coming for a State visit. That was a big deal. The government was forced to select an alternate and lesser location. If you understand Chinese culture, that was not a small deal. The hardliners prevailed and in rolled the tanks.
Also, you can't look at Tienanmen though the eyes or our experience. Historical factors come into play, most notably the Cultural Revolution and the insanity and cultural horror brought on by students.
Most Chinese do not look favorably on student protests not wanted to go down that road again. Political stability and prosperity are not given up easily when the alternative led to so much terrible times.
In Hong Kong, the concession may have come late but it was offered. In the long view, that victory is better than what is coming would be my guess.
I'll admit I am not completely up to speed on Hong Kong situation presently.
I understand both judicial systems - I have direct experience in both. The people of Hong Kong are certainly correct to protest and resist any imposition of the Mainland Chinese legal system on the Hong Kong people.
