But why try to set a fire at a store? There are so many other crimes that can actually make a profit —. I don’t get this. Besides, Niles, Michigan is a pretty nice little rural town ( adjacent but outside south bend Indiana). Niles isn’t some big crime infested Democrappic stronghold full of muggers burglars and people who shit on the streets

Niles is NOT a nice little rural town. Its big brother, Benton Harbor is a crappy liberal infested city and has infected Niles with crappy municipal services, sub poverty line economics and general political malaise.

__________

I was told about this when I first worked in retail that there are often “teams” of individuals who will do this kind of thing.

The “firebugs” set a fire inside the store, and then, when everyone is trying to extinguish the fire and evacuating the building, their affiliates will shoplift everything of high value and walk out with everyone else.

Loss prevention, store management or whomever will be busy with getting the fire department called, securing cash, evacuating customers, etc., to be able to monitor or stop the thieves. They will write it off as “shrink” and everyone pays via higher prices.
