The WXs are cylindrical, those appear to have a tapered section in front of the eyepiece.
Holding your arms out away from the body makes for a shaky view.

You are probably right although they do look cylindrical to me. That was why I immediately thought of those Nikons.
The Canon IS would make sense and I agree with you about holding them too far away. I would not have even thought about it but realized that I always hold my upper arms against my body for a more stability.
I never even thought about it and have been using them since around 1958.
