Don Cherry has been fired by Sportsnet following remarks made on Coach’s Corner Saturday evening.

I recall in interviews from the past that he knew he was living on borrowed time and that this day would come eventually. He could read the political correctness that existed at his network the public broadcaster CBC and he knew some there would fire him if they could. His popularity was his shield since everyone who watched HNIC watched for his show between periods. He is getting up there in age now but I’m sure he could go on. If there was a hill to die on this one would be one he would be most happy to do so. He loves the military and vets as much as anyone.
"You know, I was talking to a veteran, and I said, I’m not going to run the (annual Remembrance Day montage) anymore, because what’s the sense? I live in Mississauga, nobody wears, very few people wear a poppy," said Cherry. "Downtown Toronto, forget it, downtown Toronto, nobody wears a poppy. And I’m not going to, and he says, wait a minute. How about running it for the people that buy them?
"Now you go to the small cities and you know, the rows on rows, you people love — that come here, whatever it is — you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you can pay a couple bucks for a poppy or something like that. These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada, these guys paid the biggest price. Anyhow, I’m going to run it for you great people and good Canadians that bought a poppy."

I don’t see anything hurtful that Don said. The politically correct thought police should be ridiculed relentlessly every time they open their stupid mouth. The guy wants people to honor and remember the men that sacrificed so much for their country. Only a asshole can’t handle that.
It’ll be interesting to see how all this falls out. Don has been urged to run for office but he felt comfortable where he was and has never done so. A savvy competitor could certainly snap him up. Lots of opportunity for him if he ever decided to do something else.

Actually, I was just reading an Osprey Publishing book titled “D-Day Beach Assault Troops,” published in 2017.
It references a lot of Canadian units, some French. For example, on page 38 there’s a pic of soldiers from Le Regiment de la Chaudiere waiting in their landing craft.
As to French Canada’s overall contribution to the war effort, I admit I have not studied this closely. I get the impression that the Quebecois were more engaged in WW2 than the Great War, but that’s just an impression.
I read Cherry’s “rant” and fail to see anything even remotely toxic or untrue. Thankfully he didn’t apologize, and hopefully he never will.

Mississauga is China and Pakistan of the Great White North. I absolutely agree that most of the folks there do not know, or care, what poppies represent.
The PC spineless leftist elitist media cucks in Toronto know what it means, but do not care either.
But then just about any group except whites wouldn’t hesitate to say “our people”. I’m just pointing out the double standard. In effect whites are not allowed to criticize anyone who isn’t white.
And I don’t go around criticizing other people constantly but when a non-white does something that directly hurts whites or anyone else or the social good, not being able to criticize disenfranchises whites.

Don Cherry said nothing wrong. In fact I applaud what he said. NHL league management does not know their game’s typical fans.
My grandfather did his some of his WW2 pilot training in Quebec (likely Bagotville) where he saw the “zombies” first hand.
Those were french draftees who refused to do anything.
It gave him a life long perspective on french quebec.
