DH’s kidney doctor told him to never take omeprezole (or any other PPI) again. Said it’s very bad for the kidneys.
She substituted the older drug ranitidine. That seems to work well for DH. Until the FDA did a recall on some ranitidine so everyone pulled all of their ranitidine, even that not contaminated.
Will see if he’ll tolerate some bicarb!
Mother died earlier this year after a hip fracture at 102 but she and I have been take PPIs since about 1990 -- no kidney problems. She had a bit of bone loss (understandable at that age), but not at a clinical level (calcium absorption is the other thing they try to scare you away with).
