Many years ago, when I was teaching in Hartford, CT, the Whalers team came to the our inner-city school.

I had never seen a hockey player, up close. The scars, stitches, butterfly bandages, missing teeth, black and blue skin patches was astounding.

Gnarly.

One year when I went to renew my drivers license the guy in line ahead of me was Eddie Johnston, longtime NHL goaltender who went on to become coach and GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins. I think at the time he was working for the team as some sort of semi-retired senior advisor. I had never seen a face covered with so many scars and evidence of past stitchwork. You could really tell he had played most of his career in the days before goalies wore masks.

Ahhh! I remember the "Whaler's Fight Song" they would always play when they got a goal!

Hahahahahaha...for years I had no idea it even had a name, but...boy, do I remember that song!

Brass Bonanza! Whalers Fight Song!
