A short while ago as I was bringing the recycling ca in from the curb I heard an unusual sound, a low pitched whining that sounded like a big jet in trouble. I spotted the source a minute later- a military Osprey aircraft with those huge props, cruising down the beachfront.

JR may be on to something. There are Ospreys stationed in Grand Prairie and the atmospheric conditions may have been favorable for you to hear them.
