It hasnt happened in nearly thirty-five years, but Michigan residents are finally seeing brighter Octobers. It is a reputation Michiganders are happy to let go. Along with being home to some of the nations roughest cities, Michigan is also the only state in the union to ever have a problem with Devils night.
Randolph Nilson is familiar with the day and says, On Devils night it would be the night before Halloween and thats when people would go out and do mischievous things.
At its height in the mid-eighties as many as 800 fires would burn across Michigan cities in one night. That could include both abandoned houses and cars, all for fun.

Having grown up and lived in and around Detroit my entire life, I can say that things have gotten better compared to the ‘67 riots. But...as I tell my kids you need families, nice neighborhoods, nice houses, jobs, safety and infrastructure inside the city limits for it to go back to its glory days post WWII...parks...entertainment venues (parks, tennis courts, swimming pools, etc., etc.)...movie theaters (a thing of the past?), MOTOWN, contending sports teams, picnic areas, lots of shopping retailers on major avenues, nearby great paying jobs (arsenal of democracy, motor city), great schools (I subbed at many) non-corrupt government officials, etc., etc. A lot of great people have put a lot of effort and money into making Detroit a desired living space-place to raise children in the last couple of decades. Will it ever get back to its glory days? Dunno. It’s a long, long road, but it is taking baby steps in a positive direction and it is great to see articles like this.
Our pensions remained intake and we get a 2% COLA which was a surprise.
DFD-EMS Division.
The most dangerous night in the City of Detroit is New Years Eve.
Devils Night was a lot of work, no break, no rest.
But New Years Eve, it seems everyone was firing their weapon all night long. A fire truck or ambulance with lights and sirens on, were just a fun moving target from a high rise building.......
Ew, Jack White.
Alice Cooper used to do an annual show, joked that afterward, in the band’s honor, the townspeople would burn down the city.
Very cool you’re Detroit Fire Department. I can’t remember which engine company used to come by my store (farthest northwest side, Grand River & Telegraph) what a great bunch of guys. But you know that. Everybody loves the fireman, especially when the visit has nothing to due with a fire.
Where you in Redford Twp.? Very close to the border there. You know, the hostile suburbs! LOL
I was a Westside medic primarily. But my area of coverage did include Downtown. DRH, HFH, Grace, Sinai (before it closed) was where I practically lived. Live in Northern Michigan now. Sure miss the City sometimes. Now Im in Elk country.
Grew up a ways from Detroit. On the 60s it was soaping windows, lighting paper bags of dog doo on porches, peanut butter on door handles, warm Limburger cheese in milk chutes, toilet papering...
Bullet holes, stolen cars, drug addicts, and the prostitutes who all looked like their face had been run over by a truck.
