KFC used to sell plump, juicy fried chicken, but the product today is rather scrawny. I never considered resorting to firearms, though. I just drive a block farther to Chick-fil-A.
I pretty much quit buying KFC because there’s just too much salt in it — mostly in the breading, but why buy KFC if not for the tasty breading? The last time I did eat some, it was plenty juicy tho’. Maybe yours is a function of local franchises?
It certainly can’t be due to a lack of plump chickens. The size of the thighs or breasts often sold at our local groceries is regularly fairly impressive. Granted that the science of “meatbirds” (genetics, cultivation, etc.) is quite “mature”.
As an aside, we used to raise a few free range meatbirds ourselves, but no longer do, partially because over time you get more out of good egg layers, partially because they are easy prey for predators (too chunky to fly well / run fast), partially because my wife for whatever reason doesn’t like dressing larger birds, and partially because our meatbirds almost always were very friendly, and it’s a bit hard, at least for me, to “harvest” a tame / gentle bird that wants to try to jump in your lap and eat out of your hand...
