Saturday takeaways: Oklahoma upset shakes up College Football Playoff picture [CFB Week 9]

For the third consecutive week, a top-10 team fell in stunning fashion and shook up the potential College Football Playoff race. Unranked Kansas State’s 48-41 upset of No. 5 Oklahoma on Saturday follows South Carolina’s upset of Georgia and Illinois’ stunner against Wisconsin in jumbling the top of the rankings. With the Sooner bandwagon toppling over this week, much like its Schooner did last week, Oklahoma will start the CFP rankings well outside the top four. Their loss, combined with Notre Dame’s faceplant at Michigan, shakes up what the initial CFP rankings will look like on Nov. 5. It’s safe to assume that No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 LSU and No. 3 Ohio State will be the top three teams in some order when the rankings are announced. All three have byes this upcoming week. Expect LSU to be ranked No. 1 because of the amount of quality wins – at No. 15 Texas, No. 7 Florida and No. 9 Auburn. (Those were the rankings at the time of the wins.) The best news may be for the SEC, which has significantly better chances of getting in two teams with the Big 12 potentially out of the picture.

In honor of this being Halloween week, the grim reaper was collecting victims throughout college football.

RIP Notre Dame Playoff Chances. ND thought it might have a reprieve with Oklahoma being upset but Jim Harbaugh sold his soul to the devil to get a win over a Top 10 team.

RIP Jonathan Taylor's Heisman. Gaining only 52 yards for Wisconsin's biggest game of the year.

THE Ohio State University DE Chase Young might need to buy a suit for trip to New York.

RIP Texas Is Back. TCU for some reason wore red on their uniforms. If it represented the blood a Horned FrogLizard spits from its eye as a defensive weapon it worked.

On the bright side, there were some Lazarus like raising from the dead.

Oregon's playoff chances. If Oregon wins out they should have a better resume than Oklahoma.

SEC getting two teams into playoff. Possible both Alabama and LSU will get playoff bids.

Most Harmless Fans Throwing Stuff onto the Field in Football History: Usually fans throwing stuff onto the field from plastic containers, to batteries, to snowballs represents a danger to players and referees. In the case of Michigan, fans expressed their anger at a pass interference call by throwing towels.

Auburn has a championship level defense. Too bad the offense failed them again.

Smokey wagging his tail: Tennessee was the butt of jokes in college football at the beginning of the season; see SEC Shorts skits. Let us give them credit as they have shown great progress. They play legit against 'Bama and just put a beatdown on USCe. They have a chance of becoming bowl eligible.

And ASU lost for the second week. Whenever we get ranked, we find a way to ruin it. 😖

I am a Big Ten and Ohio State fan. It would upset me to see two SEC teams in the CFP until I remember the playoffs are about the four best team teams. Ohio State looks formidable but will not be battle tested like teams in the SEC West

In a few weeks Alabama and LSU go head to head. One of them will lose, but it will be interesting to see how close a game it will be. Auburn couldn’t quite get there against LSU, but the final score wasn’t that far apart. The rest of the season will be interesting.

Given the way they have played the last few weeks, there is a strong possibility that Georgia will lose to either Florida or Auburn, if not both.

And Saturday, UConn snapped it’s FBS losing streak. Okay, it was against UMass (or as The-Boneyard.Com calls them UMess) but it was a win.
