It’s not a hoax; this technology has been developing for a couple decades or so. But it’s not a ‘cloaking device’ like in Star Trek. It uses micro etching to bend light selectively. The ‘cloak’ is a semi-cylindrical sheet which keeps the background in focus but redirects light away from what is directly behind it.

We are way behind the ChiComs in our military technology and preparedness, but our government is hiding that from us.
Very good, but the objects did not vanish from sight. Their image was distorted so the objects were not recognizable.
It shouldn’t require much more technology to “undistort” the images and restore some of the original image, perhaps enough to render it recognizable once again.

Looks like they’re using large number of prisms to disperse the light.
Gyges of Lydia had a ring which made him invisible if he turned it a certain way. No one knows what happened to the ring after his death.
