Details are slightly different than what I remembered and related above. Did some poking around and found this commentary about the book, Silent Coup ...
The book Silent Coup argues that the Watergate break-ins were really meant to cover up embarrassing information about a call-girl ring whose “Madame” was a roommate of John Dean’s wife, and that John Dean ordered the break-ins. Watergate, as Watergate figure G. Gordon Liddy maintains, was “a Dean Operation.”

IIRC, John Dean was mixed up in the ring in some manner kinda backing why he ratted on everyone...to get his nads out of the vise grips.Liddy also claimed that the wife of John Dean was the leader of the pross ring.
