Phyllis Wheatley was an African American poet whose work was celebrated in both England and America, and by such figures including Voltaire, George Washington, and John Paul Jones. Tragically dying at the young age of 31, Wheatley's work on early abolition and individual efforts have sadly been too overlooked. Note: This quote comes her book "Poems on Various Subjects."
