Believe it or not, my daughter was “thrown away” by her “upper class family” because her birth mother did NOT think that she would “ever be PRETTY”.
When my “ugly ducking” proved to be “super smart” & then turned into a SWAN at 18YO, they wanted her back.
(What I said, under my breath, is UNPRINTABLE, so my letter of response was “only minimally polite” & essentially said: “FORGET IT, She is MY daughter.”)

I have never heard that before unless the child had down syndrome which by what you just said the child did not. “Never be pretty”? What was she a show dog?
