If as a cop you are so scared that you cant respond to a non-emergency call without pulling a trigger blindly through an open window, you should tell someone so they can kick you off the force before you murder anyone.

An excellent observation.
In past days before all of this “important that you get home safe” stuff and the swat team mentality, I remember a gray head state trooper arresting a drunk driver and putting him in the front seat. He then turned his back on the drunk in his patrol car to talk to me and to check the drunk’s car. A real man confident in his behavior.
I also had a personal experience during which a detective climbed up a front stoop to a window to do a welfare check on a woman who had locked herself in her house and would communicate with with no one, not even her daughter.
After it was over, he laughed at the fact that she came to the window with her arm in a sling. He said that it went through his mind that she might have a pistol hidden in the sling and he might get shot.
Two examples of the old style cop.
I suspect that there are some left, but they are not seen on TV.
Cops especially sheriffs Dept used to be better overall
They might have taken cash from bootleggers and let the occasional whorehouse operate unencumbered but they were more common sense and didnt view those they are supposed to protect with the same suspicion and disdain
Even me a long haired hippie in the Deep South fear
Y 70s fully expecting cops to harass me in my old Bmw 1600 also knew theyd help me if I needed it
And if I had a gun on me they were cool about it and liked to talk shop on guns and deer hunting as they wrote my ticket
Its a different world of Lon Horuchis now and worse like the Houston red dog unit killed those poor folks in their home ...and their dog
