I can see them as like Lenin's "Useful Idiots" in the sense that the CPUSA loves what they're doing. The Communist Party has always wanted to collapse the American democratic system, and replace it with Soviet-stye Communism.
Even back during Occupy, around 2011, the CPUSA was heavily promoting the class-envy themes that permeated Occupy. If you attended any of the protests you probably saw signage with raised fist logos, with slogans like "workers of the world unite" or "down with capitalism", etc. But the people carrying these signs barely know any history, and are just there for higher wages and to hurt the rich. They have the naive view that doing away with capitalism, or taxing the rich, or seizing wealth of others is somehow going to be a simple solution for their own economic woes and low self-esteem. They think all good things come from government, and that the economy is like a pie: if you get a big slice then someone else has to get a smaller slice, and the size of the pie (wealth) is static, so only government can help them get a bigger slice of the pie. They don't believe in growing wealth (the size of the pie) for everyone through capitalism.
So, yes, Antifa is composed primarily of Useful Idiots. They take the risks but don't get the adulation, they don't get to use the bullhorn at rallies. But at the top, you can bet those people are ideologues who know who their masters are and understand the nefarious long-term aims behind Antifa and its puppet-masters.
I don't think this kid Sean was one of the true ideologues, certainly not at first; he probably, at first, felt a strong need to belong to something, and he found it at a young age with community activism. He thought of himself as an activist and a small-A anarchist (oppose the police and always speak out against "the system"). As an Antifa member he had knowledge of, and helped orchestrate violent acts, but was more of a management trainee in the sense that he was interested in the logistics and publicity, and working his way up to be one of their insiders. He had to stay out of jail (avoid felony convictions) to achieve his goals. He took fewer risks in public than the lower soldiers of Antifa.
He also had competition among the other "Resistance" fighters, so he might have met his demise that way, in a power struggle. Maybe we will find out; right now we don't know of anyone inside Antifa willing to go public with what really happened.
Yes he did, but if someone does "wise up" and goes to the police they will be considered a traitor. Antifa is telling insiders not to talk.
But it comes down to the same concept of "Useful Idiots." Where they're doing the bid of their own opposition without even realizing it.

Maybe his death was also an effort to silence him. He was careful not to get involved in felony crimes — did he turn informant to the FBI? He wouldn’t have done this for the local cops because he would know they have been infiltrated. Maybe his FBI informants status was leaked and he was knocked off by the local goon squad in the PPD.
Whatever happened, the truth is going to be very damaging to Antifa, in terms of their ability to function as a secretive terrorist group operating with impunity.

He started precociously at age thirteen with getting involved as an "activist" in leftist community causes (his nickname was '13' for this reason). We can sometimes excuse a 13-year old punk for being misguided but ....Later he joined Antifa, and was an "activist" like members of ISIS are "activists".
As for being a Fellow Traveler, absolutely he was, and was at the moment he met his demise. That is a well-known simple euphemism for communist (big or little 'C').
