It really was a great movie. One of the best I’ve seen in a long while. You are right about it not being a comic book type movie. This Joker could have been in any city not just Gotham.

That actually wasnt so depressing. My son (21) thought it was a bit bad how they made light of the great war. I told him it’s what soldiers do.

Watched it yesterday. Followed up by re-viewing of The Dark Knight at home.

Cant argue with the quality of the movie and the acting of Joaquin Phoenix. It was all good. Most importantly, in provided the back story to the excellent role played by Heath Ledger in TDK.

That said, as a stand alone movie, Joker is kind of slow.

I also re-watched a few of the Jack Nicholson scenes from the older Keaton Batman movie. Completely different character origination with Jack Nicholson, but I still love seeing him in that role. “This town needs an enema!” just cracks me up.

All the fake controversy ahead of opening day helped make this a “must-see” flick. Joaquin Phoenix did an excellent job too.

I thought Ad Astra was horrible. Joker was okay. I hope Joaquin Phoenix’s acting earns him an Oscar but I wouldn’t rate the movie itself that high.

Watched the new Zombieland last night. Good choice. It’s just another fun movie.

“Joker”? They finally released a tell-all about Obama?

Without spoiling the film for those who might like to see it....
It had the same major flaw that Last Jedi did.
Parts of the movie were pointless.

I get that. I saw the TV previews. My paternal grandmother was a Canuck from New Brunswick. My grandfather went across the border from Maine to find his bride. She didn’t become naturalized until WWII. In her 70’s she could still name the young men from her home town that didn’t make it home from the “Great War”.

I didn’t have a lot to do last week so went on a little movie binge. Lol. I saw Ad Astra, The Addams Family, Joker, and Zombieland Double Tap.
My fave was Zombieland.

I’m looking forward to “Midway” and “Jojo Rabbit.”

There’s quite a bit of cussing, but no sex/nudity that I remember.

And less violent than the True Grit remake. It’s not particularly gory by modern Hollywood standards.

Granted, it’s more visceral and repugnant violence. It puts you right there when it happens. You will feel it.

Kids and the empathetic should not see it. Nor should anyone with a lot of childhood trauma.

But I thought it was a masterpiece.

Best Picture and Best Actor awards are in the offing.

Don’t know who will join Joaquin Phoenix as co-nominees for Best Actor at the Academy Awards, but good luck with that. Not only did Mr. Phoenix own the role, but he opened up a much darker portrayal for comic book villains as the way they should be: human.

“but he opened up a much darker portrayal for comic book villains as the way they should be: human.”

I agree completely.

The ruthless insanity, as conveyed by the principal, is shocking and terrifying. As are the events that nurtured the the madness.

And it is human madness, steeped in human events.

It’s not a cartoon.

It’s a classic Greek Tragedy.

Not sure about classic Greek tragedy because I think there has to be connection with mythology. Someone with a degree in that study should correct me. But as a tragic villian as Aristotle desired tragedies to be, I agree. It makes you root for the bad guy.

I’m glad DC isn’t trying to be like Marvel. DC could develop dozens of movies from their characters and sub-characters like Vicki Vale, Jimmy from Superman, do a movie about Wayne Enterprises, etc.

And the father abandoned his son and murdered his crew in the search for the divine alien angels before dying himself. His son lived, returned to earth, to love and life.
It is an atheist twist on the redemptive sacrifice of the son story.

thanks Mariner- I don’t mind some swearing- but hate movies with over the top “F” This, and “F” That- every third word or so- I’ll probably wait till it comes out on TV- which is why i wondered as I don’t want to be watching it if there’s a bunch of homo stuff, sex scenes, swearing as my family (and i actually) don’t like that kind of stuff (Which is why we tend to stick to tuner classic movies mostly lol- modern movies just always seem to have the idiotic gay agenda attached to the movies- or over the top swearing and rage- etc- I call it overacting- I much prefer artistic acting and directing- where violent scenes are suggested in innovative and non direct ways (like hitchcock where you didn’t have to see buckets of blood, and a head rolling across the street, or limbs flying everywhere to know someone just got murdered- the over the top rage and tough guy acting just takes all the viewer interactivity out of a movie- leaves nothign to the imagination- I don’t find that entertaining-)

But i like the suggestions that it’s a psychological masterpiece- hopefully it will be which interests me- but again- if it’s overacted- I will probably be dissapointed- but we’ll see-

that’s what I look for in movies- a real good backstory that exposes a character’s current state of mind- sounds liek it might be a good movie- but I’ll have to watch it alone- family might think it too rough-
