“lightning bolts” many meters long typically spring from the switch, and last for several seconds.

Yes, they can be seen as “explosions” on radar.

I picture bajillions of electrons rushing down a wire. Someone breaks the circuit, and now the electrons pile up at the end of the wire, eventually jumping into the air.
