Particle masks are readily available - I always wear one when sanding, grinding or sweeping the shop.
Vacuum systems to suck the particulates out of the air about as fast as they are thrown up exist too.
Frac sand mining has recently loosened the regs on dust mask usage.
That will be the next industry where lawyers sue over silicosis.
MSHA does the workers no favors on that!!
