A former police officer who argued she had a right to use lethal force when she killed an innocent man after mistakenly entering his apartment has been convicted of murder.

Amber Guyger faces a lengthy prison sentence after a jury found her guilty of the murder of Botham Jean in Dallas on 6 September last year – a verdict Jean family attorneys hailed as a significant moment in the battle to hold police accountable.

Guyger is white. Jean was black. Guyger is the first Dallas police department officer to be convicted of murder since the 1970s, the Dallas Morning News reported.

But, but she was scared to death that a burglar was going to kill her.

What type of murder was she convicted of? I can’t find it in any of the media stories. 1st degree, 2nd degree, some other form of homicide?

Sorry. White cops will be held to a higher standard.

I don’t understand why the charge was 1st degree murder. It wasn’t premeditated.

If I was a juror I would ave voted guilty on some kind of negligent homicide charge but not 1st Degree murder. She surely deserves to spend time in prison...perhaps even ten years but no more than ten.

I am firmly convinced that she didn't set out to harm anyone...she made a huge mistake.Nothing more, nothing less.

If there had been a history of "bad blood" between them...or if she had a history of aggressive behavior I very probably would have voted guilty of murder. But unless I'm mistaken neither of those two things were true.

I feel very sorry indeed for the dead guy and his family. I think they have good reason to sue her for millions...and possibly the city as well.

“She’s white, he’s black, end of story.”

She killed him because he was black?

My sympathy is with the guy who was minding his own business in his own apartment when a police officer entered and shot him.

The wrong person died in that apartment.

She’s white, he’s black, end of story.

So you think she should have gotten off with a complete acquittal, the thanks of the city, and a complementary weekend in Vegas?

Just plain murder.

I haven’t seen anything about that, either. They did say she faces a sentence of anywhere between five years and life, which is a hell of a spread. I doubt it was first degree murder, but could very well have been second degree. In any event, she’s going to prison, and deserves to.

Actually, no: a female cop walks into the wrong place and kills an innocent man who’s minding his own business.

What kind of weird thinking are you using?

How’d you react if some cop entered your home and shot you?

There is no 1st degree murder statute in Texas.

Texas doesn't have degrees of murder. Murder is murder. It can be classified as capital murder under circumstances where the death penalty is warranted.

It’s in all the articles including this one.

So if I break into your home and shoot you then should I get off since it was a huge mistake, nothing more? I didn't set out to kill you.

She’s white, he’s black, end of story.

It seems to be true that you almost never hear of cases where a black cop kills a white person. There are enough black cops in this country to make it likely that that happens at least occasionally.

Although she most assuredly deserves to spend time in prison for her appalling negligence it does seem possible...if not likely...that her race, and his, have worked against her,at least in terms of press coverage and very possibly in other ways as well.

I’d like to hear details from someone that has followed the case closely.
