My parents were more hands-off when I went to college but I was 25 when I started

Same with me - and for me that was also an era when long-distance calls were not cheap. I would actually write letters, and call collect from the public phone once a week or so.

Me too, I went to college in the mid 90s and graduated in 99. That was when I owned my first computer, a Pentium 90 MHz with the big mama 1 Gig hard drive!

It kills me how the Navy guys now have e-mail and Skype and all that. When I was in the Nav, it was letters on the ship, that was it. When my carrier pulled into a port, the phone call home from a call-center was like $40-$50.
