I’ve been watching the documentary “Country Music” on PBS. The documentary is excellent. Interesting stories about the Possum George Jones.

I owned a bar back in the 70s and George Jones was my drinking music after we closed at 2-3 AM. The Grand Tour was one of my favorites, and after about a half a quart of tequila I even thought I sounded better than ol' George.

George Jones was a colossus. To me, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, and George Jones are the heart of country. A Jones favorite:

I saw Jones in Pasadena, Texas, at Shelley’s (later Gilley’s) in the summer of ‘67. He got drunk and didn’t appear after the intermission. One of his nicknames was No-show. For me it was Half-show.

It was more like I staggered the walk.

I had to get out of the bar business, while it was very profitable, I needed to remember my name [among other minor details}.

I liked the product too much, and had another business to run, so I had to make a choice.

The booze business got sold, no regrets, made money, had fun, lived to tell {and embellish} the tale and the blurry memories.

My bar partner and 15 of his closest friends took a caravan of pickup trucks and campers to the grand ol' opry to see ole George {and he was a no-show} and they stayed and partied for two weeks.

Not one of them was pissed that George was a no show {I don't think they even remembered he was missing}].

That group of country boys {and buxom gals} partied so hard, two kids were born because of the trip.

There are some really great country singers in today's world, but for us old folks, George Jones was one of the all time greats.

BTW, if you want a real tear jerker, listen to Ray Charles and Willy Nelson, duet, "Seven Spanish Angels", and I guarantee, if you've had a couple of shooters, you will bawl like a baby.

I just listened and I've had a few and I did. It is on utube.

Its good. Its on Amazon prime and other streaming.

I enjoyed the Waylon Jennings segments the most.

Apparently, they had scheduled an interview with Ole Possum for the doc.
He passed away days before.

I was a long-time Ray fan when I saw him shortly after 9/11 with the Houston Symphony. I ask the lady with me if she could drive a stick shift. She wanted to know why. “if he sings America the Beautiful, I’ll cry, lose a contact and you’ll have to drive.” He did, I did and she did.
