Uh, this is Hyde Park we’re talking about, an outpost of civilization where the borders with The Hood are a bit fuzzy...outside of Museum of Science and Industry I’ve always been a bit nervous roaming around there.

The borders aren't fuzzy at all. I lived at the edge of one (Maryland & 55th, one block east of Cottage Grove).
Here are the borders:
East : Lake Michigan
South: 60th (Night)/63rd (Day)
West: Cottage Grove / Drexel (Women, night)
North: 47th (Men Day), 51st/Hyde Park Blvd (Men Night, women Day), 53rd (Women Night)
Since then, the whole area seems to have worse parking (and now meters everywhere!), general decline with regular panhandlers we didn't have in the early '80s. A little bit of University gentrification south of 60th may have taken place. The Institute of Christ the King Church around there may be a contributing factor. Cottage Grove remains a HARD red line.
