I know “Luftwaffe” merely means “Air Force” in German, but one would think that they would want to come up with a new name for that particular branch of their military.

In German ‘’waffen’’ means ‘’armed’’ as with weapons. “Waffe’’ means ‘’arm’’pretty much the same thing. It’s the German language.
