Margaret Atwood: Anti-abortion states should pay women who give birth
The Hill ^ | SEPT. 20, 2019 | Jessica Campisi

Posted on 09/22/2019 9:56:52 AM PDT by Morgana

Margaret Atwood, the bestselling author of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” said Friday that states passing anti-abortion laws should pay women who give birth.

In an appearance on The View, Atwood notes states are rolling back abortion rights, saying, “You’re approaching a state in which women are essentially being conscripted or drafted the way you would be conscripted or drafted into the Army … they get their food, their lodging, their clothing, their medical — all of that coverage.”

She added: “If you want the state to claim ownership of women’s bodies, you should pay.”

Atwood’s comments come after multiple states — including Missouri, Georgia and Alabama — passed restrictive anti-abortion laws amid a national debate over Roe v. Wade.

Atwood’s novel, "The Handmaid's Tale,” was published in 1985 and takes place in the Republic of Gilead, a dystopian U.S. society in which women have been stripped of reproductive autonomy and are forced to give birth. Atwood penned a sequel, “The Testaments,” which was published Friday.

Many have drawn comparisons between “The Handmaid’s Tale” and rhetoric from the Trump administration, including Atwood herself.

Women who have an abortion should pay the government for the loss of taxes that the child would have paid over a lifetime.

If they accept the money can we make them register as sex workers and tax the earnings?

I’d prefer that to paying even the smallest amount of tax that might go into the pocket of these abortion ghouls.

“government should promote procreation”

And how would that go constitutionally?
You’re one of those people that think the government is superior to us the people for whom the government works

Singapore and Russia? What?

Here’s how it works, and for millennia:

Girl is raised to be a civilized person - a lady

She marries a guy who can and will support their family. Their extended family and friends promote procreation. They make it socially unacceptable for anyone within that family to abandon that family.

The government has already stepped in and messed things up.

Margaret Atwood another feminist letting the father of the baby completely off the hook

Also letting the woman off the hook. Keep your legs closed if you don't want the kid.

Not directed at you:

Close your d**n legs if you don’t want to get pregnant! I realize it takes two to get pregnant, but abortion is not birth control. It is flat out murder. I am all for pro-choice: choose to have sex, choose to have the child.
You making a mistake, or not even bothering with birth control, does not constitute a good enough reason to murder a child. There is no good reason to murder a child, give he/she up for adoption! Don’t like being pregnant? Oh well, keep your legs closed or get sterilized. I realize birth control can fail, I have a child to prove that. Thank you antibiotics. I wouldn’t trade that child for anything, he is my saving grace in more ways that one.

I always told my children to never have sex with someone they would not consider marrying. Also told them to never do anything if they weren’t up to paying the consequences.
Children are expensive, but they are worth every penny. Are they pains in the rear sometimes? Heck yeah! Grandchildren are your reward for not getting rid of your own kids when they are teenagers. lol

Margaret Atwood:

Write appropriate fiction about a Muslim-majority nation’s treatment of women.

Then go to a Muslim-majority nation, and preach your sermons.

See what happens.

Have an understanding of her book,”The Handmaid”s Tale”, I have often wondered which sex this woman hates more; men or women? Or is her book secretly a desire to be “claimed” by a man as property?
All I know is that in 64 years of life I have never met a man that would act as she expects men to act. No man I have ever known would allow his wife, daughter, sister, mother, or any female to be treated as a “brood cow”. Neither have I met a woman who would allow it to happen to her or any other woman.
But then again, I do not move about in the so-called ELITE circles as Margaret Atwood does.

I thought the Progs all wanted the Government to stay out of the bedrooms now they want you to pay the women for sex? Isn’t that prostitution?

Children are their own reward. Children are a blessing; not a curse.
This is the truth that is so often lost on the Left. When “it’s all about me” the blessings of life are no longer cherished or acknowledged.

So, let me get this straight... In Atwood’s world, a woman derives her power only AFTER she puts her pants on.
