Maybe I’m mistaken but a 10 mile square would be 100 square miles so DC is actually smaller than originally designed. Isn’t it?

I think DC gave some of it’s original area back to Maryland.

You're right. mile square is not the same as square mile.

Yes, it was originally 100 square miles. The VA part of DC was returned to VA in 1847, due to several factors.
