“The 51st state will be Israel. Imagine the glee in telling her that.”

Israel would be a good state.
We could get a 2fer with Greenland.

Make New England 1 state. That’s 10 fewer senators.

Anyone desecrating the American Flag should be executed on sight.

Instead of statehood, they should just allow D.C. to annex the surrounding four counties. Fair compromise I think.

Maybe I’m mistaken but a 10 mile square would be 100 square miles so DC is actually smaller than originally designed. Isn’t it?

The illiterate fool doesn’t know that Israel is the “51st” state. She will not be making the statement that she thinks she is making!

I think DC gave some of it’s original area back to Maryland.

I’m at a loss how we get representatives that outright hate the nation they live in.

Simple.

We allowed a lot of people who hate America to immigrate to America, where we gave them the right to vote for people who hate America to represent them.

Oh man. I'm the moron here. Forehead slap.

You're right. mile square is not the same as square mile.

Thanks for the info, brainiac!

10 miles square ≠ 10 square miles.

Sigh....I know....sigh...thought the 10 mile square was just some fancy-schmancy elaborate founding father talk...slinks away with head hung low.

See, that’s the problem. The 23rd Amendment gives the “seat of the Federal government, ie. the District 3 Electoral Votes. This was passed because residents of the District had no voice in Presidential elections. Congress passing a DC statehood bill doesn’t cancel the 23rd Amendment. To give DC statehood is going to require a Constitutional amendment and that’s not likely to happen.

But if the democrats are sincere, they can easily draft such an amendment. Getting it through both House and Senate with 2/3rds majority might be tricky, even if they scream ‘racism’. Through 38 state legislatures will be even harder.

Not 10 square miles. 10 miles square, which is to say, 10 miles on a side, making 100 square miles.

The original district went about 4 miles into Virginia. That ended during the Civil War, I would imagine.

If you look at the southern and western borders of Arlinton, VA, they complete the square.

Yes. I got corrected by a couple others.

Now my original assertion, that it would be completely 100% unconstitutional to grant DC statehood.

I’m on pretty firm ground there right?

I’ll adhere to the law within the confines of our Constitution and respectfully obey laws and social norms BUT this swamp infested government is not mine and I do not respect nor listen to most of them with very few exceptions.

Congress passing a DC statehood bill doesn’t cancel the 23rd Amendment.

And what about article 1 section 8 clause 17 of the Constitution? They'd have to rescind that via amendment as well right?

Well, they were not to be under the jurisdiction of any state. If DC were a state itself, it would be under the jurisdiction of the new state.

(God knows what they would call it)

So it would appear, at first blush, to be unconstitutional.

But, then again, as it turns out, the Obamacare Mandate is a tax, so what do I know...

But the new state couldn’t elect a state legislature that would have any authority within the confines of that 100 foot square area right? The Constitution says that the congress would have “exclusive Legislation in all cases Whatsoever”. So the new state would be powerless to pass or enforce any laws that would fall within DC anyway.
