When USC athletic director Lynn Swann resigned this week, football coach Clay Helton lost a key ally. Swann didnt hire Helton, and he and Helton werent even particularly chummy behind the scenes. But they were linked by the golden handcuffs of the ridiculous contract extension that Swann gave Helton in February of 2018. Its a deal that will be remembered as the negotiating version of Swann sitting alone at an auction and holding up his pamphlet over and over to bid against himself for Heltons services. At a time when Helton had little leverage, USC massively misjudged the market and overpaid.

Les Miles can coach. I was surprised it took him that long to get a gig.
Florida State could also be looking for another head coach by the end of this season. Willie Taggart looks like he’s overmatched in Tallahassee, and the Seminole fans are looking to push him out the door after a disastrous 5-7 season last year and a 1-2 start to this year. Urban Meyer would certainly be on the Seminoles radar given his past success at Florida!
UC Davis might win that game IF Clay Helton was on the USC sideline. Questionable hires for USC the last few times out. Lane Kiffin, Steve Sarkisian and Clay Helton are better as assistant coaches than being the main guy!
I had the impression that after LSU he had a couple of things he would have liked but when they did not materialize he wanted some time away from active coaching and took an intentional break.

Oxy played the University of San Diego in 1982 and 1983 and won both games.
I was at that same game, which would have been either in '74 or '75. The Trojans lost the '74 game--the first of 15 Rose Bowl games that I attended--but won on a two-point conversion in '75.
It has also been moving left since 1980.
I think FSU would need a cut of the Seminole casinos take to afford the buyout.
Class of '66 here. Our '67 team, under head coach John "Model T" Ford, lost in the CIF semifinals in the Coliseum. My brother was a two-way starter, as was future Trojan Ron Ayala. I was a freshman at USC, so attending the game was easy.
IIRC: The QB was Mike Rae ( I may be off one year) I remember Ayala as the field goal kicker and Rae as the QB? But Rae May have been a senior to Ayala being a year behind ( or other way around) Rae also went to USC and played for Oakland in the NFL.
ANECDOTE: Vets stadium. Lakewood against Wilson for Moore league championship. Time running out. Lakewood has the ball and maybe a five point lead. Rae is QB and is told to take a knee in the end zone, thus a safety, but a free kick. He stepped back and......fumbles. Wilson recovers and wins. Lakewood had some tough losses in those days, but some good teams!
No doubt. My alma mater, CSULB, is axing the 49er mascot and the prezzy just sent a email declaring the schools support of illegals. Hopefully the USC administration will starting drifting toward competent, if misguided, leadership at least.
Questionable?! Try INSANE!!
I happened to be in Long Beach when I heard that they were eliminating Prospector Pete. After a stop at Joe Josts We went to the bookstore and bought up the only remaining pennants they had with Pete on them. I still have a few if you want one.
Agree...but asu and ua did have a lot of success in about 1995 to 2005....i agree with the cyclical idea...but as long as their are newer cleaner safer environments to build there will be lots of migration there and 10 to 20 years later...one can see strong programs develop. I remember when ua and asu were considered podunk schools....remember when florida colleges had just a few good football schools...now ucf is barking.....ucf? However a great coach will always upset the trend.
ANECDOTE: Vets stadium. Lakewood against Wilson for ‘67 Moore league championship. 4th and 10 for Lakewood, 3 minutes left and trailing 28-26. Dale Didur dives and catches a pass for 10 yards and 1 inch. Lancers drive for the go-ahead touchdown, but Wilson, led by Bobby Grich, drives relentlessly toward Lakewood’s goal line. As they are about to score, my brother causes a fumble recovered by a Lancer, preserving the 33-28 victory in what is still the most exciting game I’ve ever seen.
I was in the ninth grade and went to several games that year at Vets stadium (within walking distance of where we lived).
Never realized that was Bobby Grich playing for the Bruins in that game, but it certainly makes sense.
Dennis Dummit was Wilson’s other QB, became UCLA’s. Rae was the better passer, Ayala the runner and kicker. Ronny came to my brother Jim’s funeral two years ago.
Removing the huge statue of Prospector Pete and renaming the Nugget cafe, the newspaper, etc. will cost money--money that could have gone for worthy causes such as fixing up aging structures. Giving into snowflakes' complaints about "racism' can prove costly.
El Rancho High School joined the Moore League in 1967. Previously, El Rancho was in the Pacific League. Their 1966 team, arguably the best high school football team in the entire US, blew out my alma mater, the Whittier High School Cardinals 48-0 despite the best efforts of our quarterback—and future USC star—Bobby Chandler, so we were glad to see the El Rancho Dons depart.
