interesting a homeowner who didn’t catch him whilst wearing that outfit would be looked at rather strangely by cops when describing the thief as being dressed as Captain America.

(The above is not a statement of fact. It is either opinion or satire. Or both.)
To: BenLurkin
There is no such thing as an ex-Marine unless dishonorably discharged. The proper term is retired Marine. Know several retired Marines and they take this issue VERY seriously.

"There is no such thing as an ex-Marine unless dishonorably discharged...." Not even then. They still consider Bobby Garwood a brother Marine.

Once a Marine.... always a Marine.

The only ex-Marines are those other-than and dishonorably discharged.
Oh, and people like Mueller.

Irritates me too, but the proper term is “Marine veteran.”

A friend of mine is a retired Army Major. His dad calls himself a retired Marine. He’s a former Marine who served two years yet he calls himself retired.
I think there’s a pretty big difference between a guy who served and a guy who dedicated most of his adult life to the service.

Marines can call themselves anything they want, just don’t let them any where near crayon’s. Marines will be Marines!
To: imardmd1
I have had Marines tell me both are appropriate. But I do believe your term is preferred so I sit corrected.

Thanks for bringing this up. I wonder when someone is going to get this into the Syllabus of Journalism Terms so that at least the headline writers can get it right for a change. They like “ex-Marine” because it is four letters and a space shorter, correct or not.

He may be retired, or not. He is NOT a FORMER Marine, get it? He is a Marine Veteran.
Once you have successfully emerged from boot camp, you have earned the title of "Marine". Forever.
